Caution falling trees!

There is an increased risk of spontaneous fall of branches and trees throughout the National Park, where the laws of nature govern the formation and termination of trees. Enter the forest at your own risk!

Fauna

The species and spatial diversity of animals in the Krkonoše Mountains is mainly influenced by the arrangement of the local landscape into four distinct vegetation stages with a varied mosaic of vegetation cover. Due to the significant biogeographical position of the Krkonoše, which is the only one of the surrounding central mountains that rises significantly above the alpine forest boundary, there have been repeated encounters between Nordic and alpine organisms in the past. This has contributed to today's relatively diverse mix of fauna, which, however, has also been significantly influenced by man.

The total number of Krkonoše fauna is at least 15,000 species of invertebrates (the total inventory is far from complete; only a few groups have published species counts, e.g. 74 species of molluscs, about 1,300 species of beetles, including over 120 species of carabus beetles, 428 species of spiders, 15 species of harvestmen and 20 species of dragonflies). Over 320 species of vertebrates live here, including 1 representative of the round-lipped (brook lamprey), 5 native fish species, 10 species of amphibians, 6 species of reptiles, 278 species of breeding or migratory birds, and 76 species of mammals have been recorded so far (many of them are extinct, but 60 species occur regularly).
